Graduating cum laude and with distinction, Dr. Gupta earned his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1985. He graduated from the honors program at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Gupta did his surgical and urology residency at the University of California in San Francisco where he served as the chief resident of urology his final year. He continued his medical training with a fellowship in endourology and laparoscopic surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. Dr. Gupta has continued his medical education with numerous post-graduate urology courses in the areas of percutaneous renal surgery and endourology and extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL).

Dr. Gupta has been the principal or collaborating author for many urology book chapters and has published numerous articles in professional journals including the Journal of Endourology, Urologic Clinics of North America, Urology, and Contemporary Urology. A noted researcher, Dr. Gupta was the Ferdinand C. Valentine research scholar for 1995-96 and named the Pfizer Scholar in Urology for 1999. For his contributions in furthering the education of others, he was named the 1998 Teacher of the Year by the Department of Urology at Columbia University. As much sought after speaker, he has made over 70 presentations of his research at numerous national and international professional assemblies. His most recent address, The Bioeffects of ESWL was given in Paris, France at the 1st International Stone Symposium in July 2001.

Dr. Gupta is an accomplished poet and has been so honored with publication of his poems by Watermark Press. In 1995 he was a semi-finalist in the North America Open Poetry Competition and in 1996 he was presented with the Editor's Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry.

Dr. Gupta is certified by the American Board of Urology .
